I live in Washington State... the home of Microsoft and Wizards of the Coast. It's particularly fantasy friendly. Of course, I also work at a video game company, so I might have gotten too-used to the geek culture. The worst comments I've ever gotten about writing have been by my uncle and my grandmother. The words are encouraging, but they do so with tight little superior smiles as if they're humoring me. And they ask me obnoxious questions, if I think I'm going to be the next JK Rowling. ... Of course, my mother assures me that that's about the most sincerity that they <i>can</i> come up with about anything, so it could definitely be worse. Ha! My slush was just particularly bad. And they gave us a pay cut and were just horrible in general to work for. It really was a great motivator for me to start my own biz because it was that or die of frustration. I'm hoping it will be a place fantasy writers feel comfortable hanging out and conversing about all things fantasy, especially writing and the publishing process.
